WACC301

Web accessibility for developers

Essential skills your computer science degree never taught you.

WACC301 is a free online open education micro-course that is primarily for people who write code for the Web or who want to understand how interactive elements on the Web are made accessible to people with disabilities who use assistive technology. A major focus is on developing expertise using WAI-ARIA, a recently introduced standard from the W3C that makes it possible for developers to create rich interactivity on the Web that can be used by anyone, including those using assistive technologies such as screen readers.

After completing this micro-course, you will:
  • Have created a JavaScript library to simplify the application of WAI-ARIA
  • Be able to distinguish between static and dynamic uses of WAI-ARIA
  • Understand graceful degradation and progressive enhancement
  • Know how to use landmarks to enhance navigation for assistive technology users
  • Know how to use live regions to present updating information and feedback messages
  • Know how to build accessible suggestion boxes, tooltips, and progress bars
  • Know how to build accessible sliders, accordions, tab panels, and carousels
  • Know how to build accessible menu bars, tree menus, and drag and drop
  • Gain knowledge relevant for IAAP certification as an accessibility professional

Improve your skills developing interactive elements for the Web that are accessible to everyone.
