Dear [First Name]

Welcome to Session 3: Introduction to WAI-ARIA

This session takes a closer look at WAI-ARIA, and how it works. WAI-ARIA alone does not make interactive web elements accessible, it is typically used along with Javascript, to dynamically update WAI-ARIA roles, states, and properties. Javascript is also used to add keyboard operability.

WAI-ARIA is a relatively new addition to the collection of accessibility standards produced by the W3C, and though it's support by various web technologies, and assistive technologies, is improving rapidly, it is still necessary in some cases to include "work-arounds" as backups for any limitations in these technologies. Graceful degradation, and progressive enhancement, are two development methods you will be introduced to, that can be used to accommodate any shortcomings in current web and assistive technologies.

An important aspect of WAI-ARIA, is it must be used correctly. Incorrect use of WAI-ARIA can make things worse than not using it at all. You will be introduced to a few tools that can be used for validating WAI-ARIA, to ensure it is being used properly.

In this session's activity you will be analyzing a website that has WAI-ARIA throughout, used to make its interactive elements function effectively with screen readers. You will be able to use the interactive elements and see how the WAI-ARIA attributes dynamically update and provide screen reader users with meaningful semantics that describe the interaction that is occuring.

This session's tasks:

Best wishes
